Emm - What is a Waterpark?

Seriously, what on earth is the Mayor talking about?

A "world class waterpark" on the Truman Waterfront property?

What does that mean? Log flume rides? Water slides?

Am I the only one who finds the whole thing strange.

Key West is an island (meaning surrounded by water). There is certainly no shortage of water to play with/on.

Plus, there is a community pool just a short walk from the Truman Waterfront.

So what on earth is the Mayor talking about?

And what's with his poor treatment of the BCCLT (Bahama Conch Community Land Trust), Norma Jean Sawyer, and the wishes of the voters of Key West who passed a referendum granting the BCCLT a 99 year lease for 6 acres.

Norma Jean Sawyer has probably done more for affordable housing than the Mayor has. She is admirable, an asset to our community, and does not deserve the maligning Mayor McFearsome has lobbed in her direction.

Meanwhile, the budget for Key West is in critical condition under the stewardship of the Mayor. Hasn't the Mayor already cost us enough with his water play toys (aka Vandenberg). Now - who really has mismanaged funds?

If the mayor has a real problem, he should submit those details to the public.

I think it is a joke. Great - we can't swim in the water for fear of contamination. The beaches are in poor shape. Yet they want to creat a pseudo-Disney World for the locals? Yeah, right. Just how much is this going to cost the local taxpayer not to mention the ultra high admission price for this idiotic idea?! Impeach Morgan and bring back Jimmy!

So was Abe Lincoln.

Listen you fearmongerer - the beaches have been beautiful! Get your miserable butt down to Fort Zach, or better yet Bahia Honda, and tell me they are in "poor shape".

Cayo Dave, do you ever read the Citizen and see how contaminated the beaches and the water is around Key West? Get your head out of the sand and read the reports - it's shocking!

Yes, Cayo Dave, with every report it is obvious you work in the tourism industry and want to have everyone just love Key West. Just how much do you pay for those rose coloured glasses or do you just live in your own hippie driven dream world? Get real!

The beaches in Key West have been doing quite nicely lately (except for Higgs Beach - gee, wonder why there is always problems with that particular water..../homeless poopers?).
Anyway, I love our little island. And for the most part, Key West's working people all rely on the success of the tourism industry.
What's your beef with tourists? Don't you ever go on vacation?
And what is wrong with a "hippie driven dream world"?

Cayo Dave would rather have a water park than workforce housing? Guess you don't care about the locals who want to stay and work in Key West. You would rather cater to the whims of an out of touch mayor. Sure, lets play rather than focus on what is really needed in Key West - a way to keep those who work here to stay here. You are out of touch with reality Cayo Dave.

To the previous anonymous commenter: are you brain damaged? Where did you get the idea that I'm in favor of a waterpark or that I am against affordable housing? Did you read my post? Did you read my comments?

I cannot believe how incredibly stupid you are. I mean rock-hard stupid. Dehydrated-rock-hard stupid. Stupid so stupid that it goes way beyond the stupid we know into a whole different dimension of stupid. You are trans-stupid stupid. Meta-stupid. Stupid collapsed on itself so far that even the neutrons have collapsed. Stupid gotten so dense that no intellect can escape. Singularity stupid. Blazing hot mid-day sun on Mercury stupid. You emit more stupid in one second than our entire galaxy emits in a year. Quasar stupid. Your writing has to be a troll. Nothing in our universe can really be this stupid. Perhaps this is some primordial fragment from the original big bang of stupid. Some pure essence of a stupid so uncontaminated by anything else as to be beyond the laws of physics that we know.

The exit is this way--->

A waterpark in Key West paid for by tax dollars is just flat wrong. If it makes economic sense, let private money do it. Otherwise it will be another drain on our resources. (HINT: if a waterpark made economic sense, Ed Swift would have built one.)

Why not allow KW citizens to use the fabulous Navy pool? My kids got to swim there at birthday parties thrown by Navy friends - it's great! Open that up to the public. Or charge a small fee for usage - that pool is excellent.

As is the community pool where both my kids learned to swim. Add some fun stuff there like the Navy pool has. Or the college pool, where we took swim lessons - that thing is huge.

Key West just doesn't need another pool... they are expensive to build and maintain. Stupid idea.

And Mayor McFearsome did not cause this budget crisis: he's the unlucky guy who became mayor during an economic downturn. Although I don't know what he's spending our money on since I'm not there and not paying close attention. But cities all over the country are now declaring or about to declare bankruptcy. Wait till homeowners start challenging their tax bills... we ain't seen nothing yet.

As for affordable housing, there will be plenty of affordable housing. Soon. The city should have stayed out of it. As you know, Dave, anything a government subsidizes becomes less available and less affordable in the long run. The market will take care of it. Soon as government gets in there and mucks around with it, the end is near.

I'm surprised no one has figured it out yet: The Waterpark is to give the 5,000 passengers from the new mega-cruise ship something to do!

Unless you are able to access the military bass with proper ID you won't get to use the Navy Pool. Some are worthy, some are not.

Sorry - you can't get in but I can! Ha! And I am sooo happy to have access!

Sorry Sally, unless you have access to the base via proper ID you can't get in - it is for military and DOD personnel ONLY! What part of this don't you get? You don't have access to the base so you aren't going to use the pool. EESSH! I am sick and tired of trying to explain that you can't get on base unless you have a reason to be there - you are military or their family, retired military or DOD personnel. What part of this don't you get? You ain't gettin' on base Sally and remember the Navy has all the good waterfront property too!

The Navy certainly has a business plan to show a waterpark here can be successful. Truman Annex Waterfront Park is supposed to evolve into a city park. Sounds like a good idea to me. However, I recommend corporate sponsorship or grants to build the park, not taxpayers money. I think people assume a Disney-esque water park and perhaps one like South Beach or Trumbo Point is more the design. Comments about McPherson's political party makes me think these comments are political in nature.
