Tip of the Hat to Rock Trueblood

Fellow local blogger Rock Trueblood has has called shenanigans on the Key West Citizen.

The lead article in yesterday's local paper detailed significant problems the "frenzied" developer Cay Clubs is facing. The problems are so serious, the Citizen writer speculated Cay Clubs has bankruptcy looming.

But today, all traces of the article have disappeared from the Citizen's website. There is no correction printed today - so one can only wonder why this particular article is gone.

Fortunately, Rock Trueblood has published the major points of the article on his blog. In his post, Rock speculates on what is going on:

"Key West is such a small town that the paper is inextricably dependent on advertising revenue to make up for its tiny circulation. And no ad revenue is bigger than Real Estate.
I feel someone, somewhere, with ties to Real Estate interests made a big ass phone call to the Citizen and asked, cajoled, pushed or even threatened Citizen bigwig with the loss of ad dollars if that Cay Clubs article wasn't erased online."
We would welcome an explanation from the Key West Citizen.

I don't think it is anything underhanded by the Citizen. That story was the lead and is only available to subscribers and those articles do not show up on the list of recent articles.

Sarah, you are quite right.
I've spent the better part of the morning removing my foot from my mouth.
Consider my hat untipped, Rock ;-/
And to the Citizen, my apologies. I'm glad to hear there were no shenanigans.
I would delete this entire post - and I may still do that in the future - but I wanted the opportunity to retract what my story may have implied.

Just another example of your extreme paranoia.

Dear Cayo Dave,
An interesting example of the pot calling the kettle black

For those of us that live here full time, we all know what a small community this is. But it seems that everyone has nothing better to do than to bash Cay Clubs, Dave Clark and everything they do. Cay Clubs is the largest employer in Monroe county and does no one realize what it does to the "hundreds" of employees throughout the entire Keys Chain that work for Cay Clubs to read all these negative comments? Please realize, these types of comments, rip the hearts right out them. The employees are your friends, family, fellow community members, your vendors, your customers. Think about that the next time you write something. Everyone needs to give this company a break as everyone is working as hard as they can to make things right for everyone. I am a Cay Clubs employee.

Cayo Dave, the Citizen knew what they were doing when they made that story the lead and that doing so would make it unavailable to non-subscribers.

Anon...Cay Clubs is the largest employer in the Keys...I think not. It may be time to look for a new job. Right now is not the time to be working for a developer.

This happens all the time, especially with lead stories in the Sunday paper. I've discussed the problem in the past with Tom Tuell and Cheryl Smith. The story does appear later in searchable archives but it takes a day or two. I've never got an acceptable answer except it's a technology disconnect editors can't explain because the website business doesn't fall under them.
